According to a Nomisma survey, four out of five Italians believe that neighborhood stores are socially vital for the stability of local communities. However, according to Confcommercio data, 206 Italian municipalities already have no retail stores at all. This is among the consequences resulting from the significant success of Amazon and e-commerce. Homes in commercial desertification-affected neighborhoods lose desirability, resulting in a 16% reduction in value (but the differential reaches 39% when compared to a home in a neighborhood with many businesses). These data indicate that urban, demographic, and social planning should be integrated with commercial development strategies. While larger cities, such as Genoa, are working to repopulate their ancient centers, medium-sized cities are suffering the most: Ancona may lose 38.3% of its businesses compared to 2024, Trieste 31.1%, Ravenna 30.9%.
