Jannik Sinner made a winning start to his Australian Open campaign, advancing to the second round after Hugo Gaston retired from their first-round match. The contest lasted just one hour and seven minutes and ended 6–2, 6–1 in favor of the world No. 2, who showed solid form despite a slightly hesitant opening.
Gaston impressed early with an effective serve and kept pace with Sinner until 2–2 in the first set. From there, the Italian raised his level, secured the decisive break and closed the opener 6–2 in 37 minutes. The second set was one-sided: the Frenchman began to struggle physically, his level dropped noticeably and he eventually left the court after losing 6–1. Sinner struck six aces and controlled the rallies with ease.
In the second round, Sinner will face Australian James Duckworth, world No. 88, who defeated Croatia’s Dino Prizmic in five sets after a grueling four-hour-and-22-minute battle.
