A 37-year-old Serbian man has become the first man in Italy to donate two organs at the same time, having a kidney and liver transplant to save his seven-year-old daughter. The procedure, conducted at the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo, was successful and without complications: both father and daughter were discharged several days ago. The young girl was suffering from a rare genetic condition that impacted both her kidneys and liver, needing daily dialysis treatments since she was four years old. In recent months, her clinical condition deteriorated, with the onset of liver cirrhosis, rendering a solitary kidney transplant unfeasible. Consequently, the Serbian Ministry of Health requested the transfer of the father and daughter to Italy for an extraordinary medical procedure. Given the unusual nature of the operation, the regional commission's approval and the Bergamo prosecutor's office's authorization were required before proceeding. The child will now remain temporarily in the city for monthly check-ups.
