In 2025, the trade publishing sector, encompassing printed fiction and nonfiction books sold through physical and online retailers, experienced a 2.1% decrease in sales volume during the preceding year. Sales decreased to €1.484 billion. The number of copies sold decreased by 3%, with 99.531 million sold over the course of a year. Market analysis derived from NielsenIQ BookData data does not dissuade publishers, who project growth in 2026, partly attributable to government initiatives to stimulate demand, notably the €60 million in acquisitions by public libraries. Over the last 10 years, reading has climbed across all age groups, but more than 15 million individuals have not read or listened to a book in the last year. The territorial divide remains significant: the South and Islands, home to 34% of the Italian population, account for only 30% of readers and 19% of books sold.
