In Italy, people are marrying less and later in life, with six out of ten ceremonies being civil, followed by a decline in second marriages, civil unions, separations, and divorces. Last year, 173,272 marriages were celebrated in Italy, a decrease of 5.9%, with religious marriages down 11.4%. First marriages totaled 130,488 (-6.7%). Provisional data for the first nine months of 2025 show a 5.9% decrease in marriages compared to the same period in 2024. Housing and employment challenges have resulted in an increase in the proportion of young people living with their families of birth until age 35, rising to 63.3% from 61.2% in 2012. The delay of initial marriages is also influenced by the increasing prevalence of premarital cohabitation. Civil unions between same-sex couples are likewise declining: in 2024, there were 2,936 (-2.7%), 54.8% of whom were men. The rise in foreign residents obtaining Italian citizenship has resulted in an increase in mixed marriages, totaling approximately 21,000 in 2024.
