Sogin has finalized the demolition and subsequent reconstruction of temporary storage Facility No. 2 for low-level radioactive waste at the Enrico Fermi nuclear power plant in Trino (Vercelli), ensuring compliance with the most recent safety standards mandated by law. Work on the 41-meter-long, 19-meter-wide, and 8.5-meter-high structure began in November 2024, with the existing storage facility being demolished and rebuilt on the same site, with a volume equivalent to that of the disassembled building. The project now involves the installation of electrical, fire-prevention, and radiological monitoring systems, which should be completed by the first part of the year. Commissioning, following testing, is expected for early 2027. Upon completion, Sogin will begin work to upgrade the other storage facility on the site, No. 2, as part of the program to optimize the storage space for radioactive waste produced by the plant's operation and ongoing decommissioning activities, with the goal of transferring it to the National Repository once it is available.
