Italy is willing to consider joining the “Board of Peace” proposed by Donald Trump for Gaza, but not without caution. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Rome remains “open and interested,” while stressing that constitutional issues prevent an immediate signature.
“At present, there are legal obstacles that require careful evaluation,” Meloni explained. At the heart of the matter is Article 11 of the Italian Constitution, which allows limitations of sovereignty only under conditions of equality among states. According to the prime minister, parts of the Board’s statute may conflict with that principle.
Italy is not alone in its prudence. Of the 52 invitations reportedly sent by the former U.S. president, only a limited number of countries have formally accepted. Among them are Morocco, Hungary, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Argentina, Israel and Canada, along with eight Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
“We remain available and constructive,” Meloni concluded, “but without shortcuts.”
