Authorities in southern Italy are beginning to assess the scale of the destruction caused by Cyclone Harry, with damages in Sicily alone estimated at €740 million.
The figure was announced by Sicily’s regional president Renato Schifani, who convened an extraordinary cabinet meeting to declare a state of emergency. The current estimate covers only direct damage, while indirect losses linked to disrupted trade and halted business activity are expected to raise the total further.
“It was an immense event, the most violent cyclone in recent years,” Schifani said, adding that the early warning system had worked effectively. “There is enormous damage to property, but fortunately no injuries or loss of life.”
The regional government has already allocated €50 million in emergency funding, with a further €20 million to follow. However, the scale of the destruction is prompting calls for national support.
Significant damage has also been reported in Sardinia. Regional president Alessandra Todde said losses amounted to “hundreds of millions of euros” and called for coordination with the central government. “This is not a situation to react to emotionally,” she said. “It requires a serious and well-planned response.”
