The damage suffered by Cyclone Harry in southern Italy is still being analyzed, but preliminary estimates show that total losses in Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria could exceed $2 billion. This figure adds to the toll of environmental calamities in recent decades, which have disproportionately affected Italy and Europe. According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), Italy ranks second on the continent in terms of total economic losses between 1980 and 2023, with $135 billion in damages. Germany leads the way, with $180 billion. The coasts of Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria were devastated by the storm, which resulted in the loss of kilometers of seafront, seaside resorts, boats, embankments, houses, and railway lines. Tourism, whose infrastructure has been severely damaged, will also be impacted in the following months.
