Italy is bolstering its air defense with cutting-edge technology to better defend its soldiers, crucial infrastructure, and population. The Italian Army has taken a strategically significant stride forward with the recent delivery of the first materials for the Samp/T New Generation and Grifo surface-to-air missile systems. The Samp/T NG is a development of an existing in-service system created under a program initiated in 2021 by the Eurosam joint venture, which includes MBDA Italia, MBDA France and Thales. The new system is capable of performing both Medium Range Air Defense and Ballistic Missile Defense tasks. Its main component is the new Aster B1NT missile, which can intercept targets at distances of more than 150 kilometers and is especially effective against tactical ballistic missiles. An advanced seeker is integrated into the missile, which is capable of intercepting targets with complex trajectories and at extremely high velocities. The Kronos Grand Mobile High Power radar, which was developed by Leonardo, completes the defense and interception system. It is one of the most sophisticated sensors now available in Europe. The radar provides 360-degree coverage and has a detection range of more than 350 kilometers. The Grifo, by contrast, is a short-range air defense system based on the integration of the CAMM-ER (Extended Range) missile, which offers extended range and 360-degree engagement capability thanks to the vertical “soft launch” system.
