The collection of signatures for a citizens’ initiative law has begun. The bill proposes to increase the price of cigarettes and all other smoking and nicotine-inhaling products by €5, including new-generation products such as heated tobacco and e-cigarettes. A total of 50,000 signatures are required to submit the bill to Parliament, where it will be debated. The purpose is to reduce smoking and increase funding for the National Health Service. Several cancer research organizations are promoting the campaign, which is the first of its type in Italy. In Italy, smoking causes 27% of all cancer cases, with direct and indirect expenditures totaling €26 billion. It is anticipated that a €5 rise in cigarette prices in Italy, which are currently among the lowest in Europe, would result in a 37% reduction in consumption.
