The damage caused by Cyclone Harry in Sicily could exceed €2 billion, according to preliminary estimates that are still being assessed. Sicily’s regional president Renato Schifani revealed the figure during a television interview, warning that the situation is worsening by the day. “This is an unprecedented emergency,” he said, urging unity rather than political disputes. “Now is the time to act.”
The situation is particularly critical in Niscemi, where a massive landslide has put part of the town at risk. “I saw a community facing the danger of collapse in front of an enormous void,” Schifani said. Regional authorities are working on a partial urban reconstruction plan that would relocate buildings away from the unstable area. “We will find the resources,” he assured.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also visited the affected areas, conducting an aerial survey by helicopter after landing in Catania. Accompanied by Civil Protection chief Fabio Ciciliano, she later travelled to Niscemi to meet local officials and assess the scale of the emergency firsthand.
