Nine Italian cities are set to play a key role in Europe’s climate transition after being selected for the EU Mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.” The initiative is supported by a new funding programme from Italy’s Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security. The cities - Bergamo, Bologna, Florence, Milan, Padua, Parma, Prato, Rome and Turin - have received the “Mission City Label” and are now committed to implementing Climate City Contracts. The Ministry has allocated €11.8 million to support their projects, with more than €1.3 million earmarked for each city. The programme will finance concrete and measurable actions in renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable mobility. The goal is to help cities reach climate neutrality while reinforcing their role as laboratories for innovation, decarbonisation and sustainable development, models that could be replicated across Europe.
