Last year, cruise ship passengers in Italian ports totaled roughly 15 million. This figure should be read alongside data on ship orders placed by shipping companies with shipyards. The order book for the next ten years, provided by Cruise Industry News, shows 74 cruise ships, some already under construction and others on order. This is an enormous investment, estimated at $77 billion, that will result in more than 200,000 new berths. With Fincantieri accounting for half of the global shipbuilding order book and the 72 ports of the Italian peninsula organized to welcome these maritime titans, Italy is the undisputed market leader. According to data collected by the Genoese maritime agency Cemar, which annually presents forecasts for the current year at Seatrade in Miami, the world's foremost cruise industry trade show, Italian ports managed 14,789,000 passengers last year, representing a 4.05% increase from the previous year. Ship calls (“toccate nave”), that is dockings, totaled 5,519 (+7.31 percent). In Italian ports that provided berthing, 177 ships arrived representing 55 shipping companies. As for individual ports, the leadership of Civitavecchia was confirmed, reaching 3.556 million passengers, followed by Naples with 1.846 million and Genoa with 1.630 million.
