A change is coming in Rome regarding access to the Trevi Fountain. Beginning February 2, a €2 admittance fee will be charged for tourists and non-residents to access the monument's inner perimeter. This transformation comes after a year-long trial period (December 2024 - December 2025), during which careful monitoring of visitor numbers—over 10 million visitors, with approximately 30,000 visits per day and peaks of 70,000—enabled the testing of new visitor experiences to address overcrowding, improve the visitor experience, and protect one of the city's most beloved monuments. From now on, its preservation will be decisively supported by the new access fee. The installation of the Trevi Fountain ticket is expected to produce €6.5 million yearly, but has stirred criticism. According to the Assoturismo (tourism association), it is "a provincial approach that commodifies even the uncommodified". "A shameful tax to cover budget deficits and, above all, the administration's inability to balance the municipal budget", argues Codacons. The internal perimeter of the monument will be accessible from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the remainder of the week. After 10 p.m., the fountain will be open to the public for free.
