A new foreign investment in Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany. The Lee family, of Korean descent and based in London, has completed the purchase of the Tenuta di Cerbaia estate, which covers 12 hectares (5 of which are vines) on the northern slope of the controlled origin zone, from Fabio Pellegrini, who had held it since 1978.owned The news was first reported by winenews.it, but details remain confidential for now. One hectare of Brunello vineyard is valued at around €1 million. Since 1978, when American "pioneer" Cristina Mariani May purchased Castello di Banfi, the range of foreign ownership in Montalcino has broadened, showing its ongoing attraction. Among the vineyards of Montalcino one can find Argentina’s Bulgheroni (Poggio Landi and Podere Brizio), Brazil’s Esteves (Argiano), France’s Epi Group of Christopher Descours (Biondi Santi), Dutchman Marcel van Poecke (Poggio Antico), recently granted citizenship of Montalcino, as well as Swedish, German, Romanian, and Canadian owners—forming a mosaic that blends with small local producers and major names in Italian winemaking such as Gaja, Antinori, and Frescobaldi.
