A canvas by an unknown artist, dating back to the late 16th century, is shining once again at the University of Palermo after a meticulous restoration and careful historical investigation, which made it possible to identify it as one of the fifteen most precious copies known worldwide of Raphael Sanzio’s celebrated Madonna of the Veil. The painting, datable to the late 16th century, depicts the Virgin in the act of adoring the Child, while the infant Saint John the Baptist looks on. Fourteen, now only fifteen, are known globally, distinguishing between accurate replicas of the 16th-century model and versions with iconographic changes. The University of Palermo canvas is one of the most exceptional examples of the latter category, which serves as confirmation of its exceptional pictorial quality. The painting was unveiled in the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, which is part of the Steri monumental complex.
