For the first time since its creation in 1495, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance has left Perugia to be displayed in New York. As part of the opening week dedicated to Old Masters at the Breuer Building on Madison Avenue, Sotheby’s is presenting an unprecedented loan from the National Gallery of Umbria: the upper panel of Pietro Perugino’s famed Pala dei Decemviri, depicting Christ in Pietà.
Originally conceived as the crowning element of the high altar in the Chapel of the Priors at Perugia’s Palazzo dei Priori, the work is on display until 4 February at Sotheby’s at the Breuer, shown alongside a selection of masterpieces from upcoming Old Master auctions.
From 7 February to 30 April, the painting will take center stage at an exhibition hosted by the Morgan Library & Museum. There, it will be displayed alongside Giovanni Bellini’s Pietà from the City Museum of Rimini, as well as other Renaissance works from the Morgan’s collection, including paintings by Hans Memling and sculptures by Antonio Rossellino.
