The first doping case at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games has been recorded, only four days before the opening ceremony. Rebecca Passler, 24, an Italian biathlete from Antholz, tested positive for letrozole in an out-of-competition test. Letrozole is a third-generation aromatase inhibitor that predominantly treats hormone-dependent breast cancer in postmenopausal women. However, it can also be used to lower high estrogen levels produced by anabolic steroid use. Rebecca Passler originates from an athletic family; her uncle, Johan, won two Olympic bronze medals and four World Championship medals, including a double relay gold. The biathlete began biathlon at the age of eight and ended up on the podium five times at the Junior World Championships, including first place in the women's 4x6 km relay in Soldier Hollow in 2022. Her World Cup debut was in November 2021 in Östersund, Sweden. Her best individual performance was 11th place in the mass start at Annecy-Le Grand Bornand in December 2025,a result she matched in the sprint at Oberhof in early 2026.
