The Mattatoio (slaughterhouse) in the Testaccio neighborhood of Rome, a complex of approximately 105,000 square meters that was constructed in 1881 and abandoned in 1975, is currently undergoing a transformation into the new "City of the Arts". It will be one of Europe's largest cultural centers, comparable to Paris' Beaubourg. The Photography Center was recently launched, but 15 big development projects are currently underway. The former refrigerated pavilion, which will house the Faculty of Architecture's central library and cafeteria, is expected to be completed in 2027. Construction on Building 27, which will serve as a multimedia library and study center, commenced in March 2025 in the former livestock warehouse. The Mattatoio, which was previously used for animal processing, will now serve as a home to studios, classrooms, the Academy of Fine Arts, the City of the Other Economy, and a popular music school.
