Online research on how best to take care of one’s health is no longer an exception: it is the norm. The internet and AI are used by 94.2% of the population to search for information on symptoms, diseases, and treatments. Of these, more than half (53.3%) do it on a regular basis. However, the most remarkable data pertains to generative Artificial Intelligence: 42.8% of Italians currently employ it to obtain health-related information, making it the second most prevalent tool after Google (73.5%). This uptake is astounding, given that ChatGPT was only released in November 2022. This is based on a poll conducted by Sociometrica and FieldCare. The study reveals a clear disparity across generations. Among young people (18-34 years old), AI has already eclipsed Google: 72.9% use it as their primary tool for searching for health information, while 57.4% prefer traditional search engines. Among those over 54, the ratio is radically reversed: Google dominates with 93.1%, while AI remains at 26.1%. "This isn't a marginal difference, but rather two completely different models of relating to medical information", says Antonio Preiti, the study's author. "Young people deal with AI as if it were an ever-present consultant. Adults stick to the usual method of searching on Google. This is a division that will reshape medicine in the upcoming years".
