A rumor that's been making waves in Rome is becoming increasingly concrete: Francesco Totti could return to AS Roma in a top management role. The player who has tied his entire career to one club, becoming its face, symbol, and identity, could finally return. Claudio Ranieri, Roma's current senior advisor, officially reignited the possibility of a return, speaking openly about the situation to Sky: "I know the Friedkins are thinking about it. I hope Francesco can be truly useful to Roma, especially because he truly is part of Roma." According to leaks from Trigoria, Roma's headquarters, discussions with Totti have been ongoing for some time. There's no talk of a signature or official announcement yet, but rather of an in-depth study into the role and powers the former captain could be given. This is far from a secondary aspect, considering that these were the very points over which Totti and the club fell out during his previous stint as a manager. After ending his playing career in May 2017, Totti immediately joined Roma's management team. In the years that followed, however, Totti repeatedly spoke of feeling marginalized, often excluded from key decisions, in a position that was more symbolic than operational. In 2018, a formal promotion arrived: the former number 10 became director of the sporting department, working alongside sporting director Monchi. Totti felt that his in-depth knowledge of Italian football and the Roman environment was not truly appreciated, and the weight of his name made it even more difficult to accept a position lacking autonomy. In June 2019, Totti resigned, publicly explaining that he could not continue working in a context where he disagreed with the strategic decisions, had no decision-making power, and felt disrespected in his assigned role. Today, years later, the situation has changed profoundly. Roma is now led by the Friedkin family, the management structure is different, and Ranieri's presence as a liaison figure could ensure the balance that had been lacking in the past.
