In the Tuscan clothing and fashion supply chain, more than half the companies are Chinese. According to data from the Florence Chamber of Commerce's research department, in 2025 there were 5,017 fashion companies operating in the Florence area. This number is significantly down from 6,538 in 2015 and 6,126 in 2020, a 23.3% decline in ten years. Within this sector, however, the share of foreign companies, particularly Chinese ones, has grown. In 2025, there were 2,975, equal to 59.3% of the total, compared to 48.5% in 2015 and 52.1% in 2020. The figure becomes even more stark when considering individual, and therefore small, businesses. In 2025, there were 3,345 in the Florentine fashion sector, of which 2,653 were foreign. And nine out of ten are Chinese. In fact, small Italian producers have now all but disappeared from the fabric of Florentine fashion. However, almost all clients are Italian, especially the major brands, which reduce labor costs by turning to Chinese workshops.
