Leo XIV is considering a visit to the United States. The occasion, writes Corriere della Sera, would be the eighty-first General Assembly of the United Nations scheduled in September at the Glass Palace in New York. The "general debate" will start on the 22nd, with Robert Francis Prevost expected to speak. The itinerary for the journey to the United States would duplicate Francis' 2015 visit, which included a visit to the White House and a meeting with the president. Nothing has been decided yet, but things are moving. Last week, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute of the Secretariat of State, flew to Washington for the farewell ceremony of Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the nuncio to the United States, who has recently reached 80 and is about to leave office. Diplomats are working quietly; no decision has been made yet, but the waters are being tested. The visit of the first American Pope to his nation is a difficult subject, especially given the historical significance of the occasion and the upcoming midterm elections in early November. Especially as the option of combining the trip to the United States with a visit in Mexico is being considered.
