It is estimated that the platforms generate €433 million in annual revenue as a result of the increasing number of fraudulent ads that target Italian social media users. According to a Juniper Research study, Italy is one of the most common targets of online fraud: nearly 15% of European revenue generated by fraudulent ads—equal to €5.9 billion—comes from the Italian market, which has one of the highest concentrations, along with the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The study, commissioned by Revolut, also found that the typical user is exposed to about 190 fraudulent adverts each month, a figure that is anticipated to climb to 250 by 2030 if current trends are not reversed. According to the survey, one in every 10 adverts seen on social media in Europe is a fraud. This circumstance leads researchers to infer that, aside from criminal groups, the primary winners of the fraud economy today are social media corporations themselves. The study cautions that consumers will continue to bear the cost in the absence of concrete interventions and effective measures by the platforms.
