Coinciding with the Winter Olympics, Italy started a campaign against sedentary habits, which are responsible for one-third of all heart disease and up to a quarter of all breast and colon cancers. Furthermore, inactive adults are up to 30% more likely to die than those who exercise regularly. Many health issues can be prevented by engaging in moderate-intensity physical activity for a mere half hour on the majority of weekdays. The Federations of Oncologists, Cardiologists, and Hematologists are promoting the campaign, which will benefit from the contributions of the champions who are currently competing. The goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles for everybody in a country where 18% of people smoke frequently, 11% are obese, 15% drink excessively, and 35% are inactive. These practices are hazardous and harmful to one's health, and they nearly usually start at a young age. In fact, alarming statistics show that as many as 10% of adolescents smoke, 21% use excessive amounts of alcohol, and 25% are already physically inactive.
