Artificial intelligence is becoming more prevalent in software development, but it is still mostly a tool to complement human work rather than a replacement technology. This is the result of the first-ever national survey in the sector, which was commissioned by Assosoftware and involved 73 associated software firms, providing a distinctive perspective on the industry's adoption of AI. The survey shows that the usage of artificial intelligence technologies has already become a structural aspect of the software development cycle in Italian enterprises in the industry; in particular, AI is most tested and used when creating code and producing technical documentation. This demonstrates that generative technologies are generally used when they can provide immediate benefits in terms of productivity and time savings. The study indicates that 78% of companies have already implemented AI tools, while 14% intend to do so within the next year. Only 8% of companies state that they have no plans to employ AI tools. It is employed in a variety of development phases, but its intensity varies. Programming is the most prevalent sector (90%), followed by documentation (69%), requirements analysis (53%), and modeling and design (51%). Adoption is more limited in the review and maintenance phases (30%), particularly during testing (17%).
