Italy is celebrating once again at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, thanks to a thrilling victory in short track speed skating. Competing at the Assago Forum, Elisa Confortola, Arianna Fontana, Pietro Sighel and Thomas Nadalini claimed gold in the mixed relay with a tactically brilliant performance.
The unexpected elimination of the Netherlands in the semifinals reshaped the final, but the Italian quartet seized the opportunity with confidence. After a controlled opening phase behind China, the decisive move came in the closing laps, when Arianna Fontana produced a perfectly timed overtake that propelled Italy into the lead for good.
The team crossed the line in 2:39.019, ahead of Canada, who took silver, and Belgium, who secured bronze. The victory marks Italy’s second gold medal of the Games and further cements Fontana’s legendary status.
For the 35-year-old, it is her 12th Olympic medal, making her the most decorated Italian athlete in Winter Olympic history. “Every Olympics is different, and every medal tells a different story,” Fontana said afterward, praising the energy of the home crowd and the strength of the team effort.
