Rome is ready to embrace top-level basketball again. More than four years after Virtus Roma withdrew from Serie A, the capital city may soon return to the top division thanks to an international consortium led by Donnie Nelson, a longtime NBA executive and former Dallas Mavericks general manager. According to what is filtering from federal circles, the group has already put into writing a pre-agreement for the acquisition of Cremona’s sporting title, now close to securing survival. This decision would clear the door for a Roman team to return to Serie A as early as next season. The initiative comprises some well-known names. Nelson mentioned Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Dončić as partners, but there is no formal confirmation on the operation details. Roberto Carmenati, a prominent international scout, and Rimantas Kaukenas, former Siena icon and already president of the Wolves of Vilnius, indicated as the group’s Italian reference figure. At the same time, talks over facilities are underway: while the Foro Italico's Central Stadium - which will serve as the team's future home - is being renovated, the new club has apparently signed a multi-year agreement to play at the PalaEur beginning next season. The project is at its core an even more ambitious scenario: the advent of NBA Europe, the continental championship organized directly by the American league, which is scheduled to take place in 2027. Rome is seen as a key site, and the return of major basketball could be just the first stage in a larger scheme.
