All Italian athletes who won a medal at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics are current or former members of one of the sports "clubs" associated with the Armed Forces (Army, Air Force, Carabinieri, and Navy) or the Police Forces (Fiamme Oro - State Police, Fiamme Azzurre - Penitentiary Police, Fiamme Gialle - Financial Police, Fiamme Rosse - Fire Brigade). Of the 195 male and female athletes on the Italian team, 132 wear Stars or Flames uniforms, accounting for 68% of the roster. This figure jumps to 90% if we omit the 48 national ice hockey players who play for "private" clubs. Practically, a state military or civilian organization provides assistance to all Italian champions in individual disciplines during their preparation and competitive practice. In Paris 2024, military sports groups and civilian bodies brought in 296 athletes to the team, accounting for 73% of the Italian Team, while in Tokyo, they numbered 269 representatives out of a total of 384, or 70%.
