In light of the deteriorating socioeconomic conditions in Cuba, the bishops have requested that the Pope postpone his visit to the Vatican, which was originally scheduled to occur from February 16 to 20. Cuba is confronting a severe energy crisis as a result of President Trump's executive order threatening higher tariffs on countries supplying Havana with oil. The bishops' decision arises from the inability to ensure the normal operation of air transport. The Caribbean island is experiencing a major gasoline crisis, and many aircraft have been suspended. Cuban bishops voiced serious worry about the deterioration of the country's social and economic circumstances in a message addressed "to all Cubans of good will" on January 31, underlining the potential of further social collapse. The bishops had confirmed that the risk of social chaos and violence in Cuba is now tangible and have asked that additional death and suffering be prevented, particularly for the poor, the elderly, the ill, and children, in a situation where "anguish and desperation have intensified.".
