According to a survey conducted by the Mediobanca Research Area on the olive oil industry in Italy, the national UAA (Utilized Agricultural Area) dedicated to olive cultivation decreased by 7.1% from 2014 to 2024. Calabria leads the ten-year trend of olive-growing desertion (30.4% of the regional UAA, -6.7% from 2014), followed by Puglia (27.3% of the UAA, -2.7%). The UAA cultivated with olive trees in Lombardy experienced a 32.4% increase; however, it continues to constitute a modest percentage of the regional total (0.3%). Puglia is the most productive Italian area for olive oil, accounting for 45.1% of the national total. Sicily (10.7%) and Calabria (10.3%) round up the Italian podium, followed by Tuscany (8.3%) and Lazio (6.8%). The 2024-25 olive oil season represents a reversal in the olive oil trend: after two years of "flat" production, global olive oil production reached an all-time high of 3.6 million tons (up 38% from 2023-24). All major producers boosted output: Spain (+51%, the world leader with 36.1% of total), Turkey (+109.3%, or 12.6%), Tunisia (+54.5%, or 9.5%), and Greece (+42.9%, or 7%). Italy (-31.8%) reversed the trend, reducing its share of world production from 12.7% in 2023-24 to 6.3% in 2024-25.
