According to a study by Deloitte, the rollout of FTTH fiber-optic infrastructure (Fiber To The Home, meaning fiber that reaches directly into private residences) in Italy has so far generated more than €16 billion in additional GDP and over 250,000 jobs. This figure is complemented by more than €5.3 billion and 90,000 jobs created through infrastructure investments. Tax revenues have also seen a significant boost, with an estimated €2.5 billion in additional state revenue generated solely from the implementation of these investments. According to Marco Vulpiani, Senior Partner and Head of Deloitte Economics, FTTH fiber “has proven to be a driver of inclusion, productivity, and regional development: it enables smart working, business innovation, modernization of public services, and the enhancement of local communities, fostering local entrepreneurship and reducing depopulation in small towns and remote areas. The adoption of FTTH is therefore a national priority to bridge the digital divide and unlock the full potential of the entire country, supporting sustainable, widespread, and resilient growth”. The environmental impact is also noteworthy. A study by the Politecnico di Torino estimates that the energy impact of the technological switch-off would result in an 86% reduction in energy consumption – equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 80,000 vehicles or the yearly energy use of 30,000 households.
