In 2024, Italy confirms itself as the European Union country with the most passenger cars relative to its population: 701 per 1,000 inhabitants compared to the EU27 average of 578. The motorization rate, which is the most frequently employed indicator to assess the environmental impact of vehicular traffic, has been expanding at an accelerated rate in Italy. In contrast, the other major economies in the Union have maintained values that are nearly identical to the EU-27 average (544 cars per 1,000 inhabitants in Spain, 579 in France, and 590 in Germany) and have been relatively stable in recent years. This is the conclusion of an analysis of the vehicle fleet in Italy in 2024 conducted by Istat, the Italian National Institute of Statistics.
