Arianna Fontana, a short track skater, has written another historic chapter in Italian sport by winning her 14th Olympic medal and becoming the most decorated Italian athlete ever at both the Summer and Winter Games. She achieved this accomplishment with a silver medal in the women's 3,000-meter short track relay. "This is medal number 14 and it’s incredible. A silver that is a dream for all of us”, Fontana said immediately after the race. The Lombard champion succeeded in surpassing the record held by Edoardo Mangiarotti, the legendary fencer who, between the 1930s and 1960s, amassed an Olympic bounty that remained unbeaten for decades. Consequently, Fontana's advance is not merely a statistical number; it is a symbolic transition between distinct periods of Italian athletics. Following the race, the champion shared a symbolic moment with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was in the spectators. “She was very happy for us. Knowing she was rooting for us is a huge source of pride", Fontana said, adding with a smile that the team promised her one of their racing suits.
