"Artificial intelligence is an extraordinary tool, capable of accelerating research dramatically: today we obtain results in weeks that previously took years, but it must remain a tool, and the person must be at the center." Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, stated this in an interview with Milano Finanza. He emphasized that "ethics cannot be the last straw: it is not a fig leaf and must accompany it from the beginning, otherwise AI will overwhelm us." He emphasized the need for spiritual intelligence because "it is that extra something machines lack. Artificial intelligence can process data and produce exceptional results, but it will never replace conscience. We need a shared responsibility that is not driven solely by profit, but oriented toward the common good, with transparency regarding the principles that govern algorithms." The cardinal also reflects on the application of technology to conflict, explaining that "today we see conflicts that still resemble trench warfare, but alongside these there are drones and systems equipped with their own strike capabilities. If this growth proceeds without ethics, the progression could become disturbing, and I fear we are only at the beginning." He then commented on Putin's statement on technological control as "a terrible but very true statement. It shows how high the stakes are, because controlling artificial intelligence means exercising enormous power, and if technology follows an independent logic, without an ethical reference, it can become dangerous."
