President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have been conferred the Gold Olympic Order, the highest honor of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in recognition of their instrumental role in the organization of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. In a letter to the Head of State, IOC President Kirsty Coventry expressed her "deep gratitude" for Italy's commitment and cooperation in making the Games an outstanding occasion. A similar honor was made to the Prime Minister, emphasizing the critical role played by the government under her leadership. The Silver Olympic Order was bestowed upon Ministers Andrea Abodi, Matteo Salvini, and Giancarlo Giorgetti, as well as the leaders of Simico, local governments, and the organizing Foundation. Honorees include the mayors of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, presidents of the Regions and autonomous provinces, and the president of the Giovanni Malagò Foundation. Mattarella and Meloni's award ceremonies will take place in Rome on undetermined dates, while the other honors will be delivered today in Milan during the official IOC thanksgiving ceremony at Milano Cortina in 2026.
