Italian is recognized as one of the most important languages in worldwide digital culture. Data from DataReportal and Ethnologue show that our language is the sixth most often used language on the web, accounting for 2.8% of global websites. This is a noteworthy success in a very concentrated environment dominated by English, which accounts for roughly 49 percent of worldwide websites, followed by Spanish (6 percent), German (5-6 percent), Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, and French. All other languages combined account for less than one fifth of the total. Compared to the demographic dimension, the Italian figure assumes a unique cultural significance: in the actual world, Italian is spoken by approximately 0.8-1% of the global population, which equates to approximately 65 million native speakers. In other words, Italian "weighs" about three or four times more online than offline. This illustrates that the web reflects not only the quantity of speakers, but also economic, technological, and strategic aspects.
