“The Visitation” by Raphael Sanzio returns to L’Aquila after nearly four centuries. The masterpiece created by the Urbino-born genius returns to the Abruzzo capital, marking one of the most prominent events on the calendar for L'Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026. The final green light was given in the last few hours, as confirmed by Pierluigi Biondi, mayor of L'Aquila, and Federica Zalabra, director of the National Museum of Abruzzo. This diplomatic and scientific milestone was achieved through a virtuous institutional collaboration that included, in addition to the Municipality and the National Museum of Abruzzo, the Directorate General of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, the Spanish Embassy in Italy, the Prado Museum, and the Diocese of Pistoia. The altarpiece, painted about 1517 for the church of San Silvestro, was lost to the city's history in 1655 owing to Spanish occupation troops and became a part of Philip IV's royal collection. Four hundred years later, the canvas is finally reunited with the context for which it was originally conceived.
