Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to closely observe the Middle East conflict. Yesterday evening, she presided over a new meeting on the regional situation at Palazzo Chigi, which included Vice President and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, and intelligence officials. Vice President Matteo Salvini, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, and Undersecretary Giovanbattista Fazzolari also took part. The discussion focused on providing an updated assessment of the security situation for Italian people in the region, who are being closely monitored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Crisis Unit. Tajani reported on the ongoing support and monitoring operations that began in the early hours of the emergency. Meloni has also increased diplomatic contacts in recent hours, meeting with many European colleagues, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as well as a number of Gulf leaders. These included the King of Bahrain, the Emir of Kuwait, the President of the UAE, the Emir of Qatar, and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince. Contacts were also maintained with the King of Jordan and the Sultan of Oman. On the European front, the Prime Minister met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who represent the rotating presidency of the European Union. Additional discussions are anticipated during the meetings of the EU Foreign Ministers and the G7 Foreign Ministers. Finally, Meloni briefed President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the latest developments in the issue and ongoing diplomatic efforts. The government restated its rejection of the attacks on Gulf countries and reaffirmed its commitment to regional stability, while also expressing solidarity with Iranian civilians impacted by repression it described as brutal and unacceptable.
