The Biographical and Thematic Dictionary of Women in Italy, edited by Emma Giammattei, an Italian scholar and cultural historian, and published by the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani, is a three-volume work of over 2,500 pages that includes 650 biographical profiles of women who have made an impact on our country in the fields of culture, politics, art, science, and sport from the 18th century to the present day. The project aimed to reconstruct the historical and geographical network of Italian women—or women who lived in Italy and were significant to the country's history—during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, as well as the first decades of the twenty-first century. From the most well-known figures, such as Rita Levi-Montalcini, who led the Institute from 1993 to 1998 and to whom the work is dedicated, to the lesser-known, the Dictionary presents the stories, knowledge, and responsibilities of women who, with skill and tenacity, contributed to the country's modernization processes.
