The symbol of the Six Nations rugby tournament has gone up in smoke. The trophy, which was being transported to a promotional stop in Limerick, near Dublin, was destroyed in a fire involving the vehicle carrying it. Nobody was hurt, but the damage is irreversible: a faithful replica will be created for the current edition. The trophy, designed in 2015 and made mostly of silver, depicts the current evolution of Europe's oldest tournament. The Six Nations organization has declared that "a new trophy will be crafted using the same design and materials as the original in order to accurately represent the history of the new creation". It will take roughly 365 hours of craftsmanship to complete and will be available for the 2027 edition. Meanwhile, attention shifts to the field, namely Italy, which is having a fierce and unexpected tournament this year. Following their triumph over Scotland and setbacks against Ireland and France—the latter presently leading the table with three wins out of three—the Azzurri will meet England in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Saturday, March 7. The match appears difficult, but the tournament atmosphere often throws unforeseen twists and turns: England, the pre-match favourites, is suddenly fighting to escape coming last in the table. Italy is consequently set to proudly defend its spot in the 2026 Six Nations.
