Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is there, along with the President of Campania, Roberto Fico, the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, and the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari. Above all, hundreds of Nola citizens have gathered inside and outside the Campanian city's church to pay their final respects to little Domenico Caliendo. Many of them are dressed in white T-shirts with a photo of the boy hugging his teddy bear in the center and the words "Our Warrior". The two-and-a-half-year-old died on February 21 at Naples' Monaldi Hospital after receiving a faulty heart transplant from Bolzano. "If we are in this crowd today, it is only because of Domenico's smile and sweetness". This is what Domenico's mother, Patrizia Mercolino, said at the end of the funeral. "Right now, he is embracing us all", she remarked, drawing applause from the emotional audience. Shortly after, the coffin was taken out to the tune of Marco Mengoni's song "Guerriero", with mother Patrizia crying and clutching a photo of her kid. From the crowd, white balloons were released into the air, applause rose, but there was also the anger of those shouting “Justice” and “Whoever made a mistake will pay". The Bishop of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino, also reflected on the community that had supported the family of little Domenico. "You have served as a reminder that grief must be shared, as it is impossible to bear such a heavy burden alone", he stated to the parents. His homily also focused on the "sensitive topic of organ donation". It is an act "of generosity and love" that should be encouraged. Similarly, the bishop emphasized the importance of believing "in good medicine," and not allowing "human error to break that alliance of trust between doctor and patient that proves to be an opportunity for salvation for so many".
