The Third Sector—the collection of private, non-profit organizations—is expected to be worth €100 billion in Italy by 2025, accounting for 4.5% to 5% of national GDP, with all indicators indicating strong development. The economic value of the Third Sector increased by 42% from the €70.4 billion recorded by ISTAT in 2015. The sector is expanding at a rapid pace; the number of non-profit organizations has increased by approximately 19% in recent years, and it is anticipated that there will be approximately 400,000 active entities by 2025. The employment impact is enormous, given that the sector employs one million people. According to the most recent official figures, one in every three nonprofit institutions is involved in sports, roughly 17% in recreational and social activities, 15% in cultural and artistic activities, and nearly 10% in social assistance and civil protection, a sector that employs nearly half of the third sector's workforce. The "Protection of Rights and Political Activities" sector has had the highest increase in the number of active institutions, up 35% from 2015, followed by the "Environment" category (+30%).
