Italy and France have signed an agreement to put industry back at the center of the European agenda. The two countries designate energy-intensive sectors and the automobile industry as the pillars that must be protected to avert an irreversible collapse in manufacturing. The most sensitive issue is the car industry, which is stuck between the green transition, Asian competition, and rising energy costs. Italy and France are advocating for more pragmatic regulations, competitive energy prices, and a significant reduction in administrative burdens, all while preserving climate objectives and preventing the dismantling of the European supply chain. A major overhaul of the legislation aimed at protecting steel, cement, and aluminum against non-EU competition is also being discussed. Geopolitical uncertainty hangs heavy in the background. "The timing of the conflict will have consequences for the energy and production system", said Minister Adolfo Urso, who announced that the government and the production system would meet soon to assess support measures.
