A notable growth of Italian patents is recorded in the sectors of the dual transition, digital and green. Between 2021 and 2024, Italian patent applications issued by the EPO (European Patent Office) showed double-digit growth: +25% for "green" technology and +16% for digital technologies. According to data from the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (MIMIT), 11,996 patent applications for industrial discoveries were filed in 2025. Indeed, Italy ranks third in the EU in terms of green technology patents, trailing only Germany and France. Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna remain the leading regions for patent filings, with a 25% increase in applications from universities and research institutions. However, there is still a long way to go. Italy has a large number of small enterprises who are unaware of the benefits of patenting. Furthermore, there is a lot of untapped innovation in processes, goods, and personalization. Thus, ignoring the fact that, particularly on foreign markets, industrial property protection serves as a powerful deterrent to counterfeiting.
