The discovery of artifacts, their unpredictable transit through time, and historical events can sometimes lead to full-fledged investigations. Thanks to the study and research of professionals in archaeology and restoration, these investigations lead to the truth and to their proper historical placement. This is the case of the mosaic depicting an erotic scene that, according to the reconstruction of the Carabinieri’s Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, had been stolen by a Wehrmacht captain during World War II and then handed over in July 2025 to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The mosaic was actually from a Roman villa in the Marche region, as proved by subsequent research conducted by the Park and the University of Sannio. The narrative began with a gift given to a German citizen by a captain, a friend of his, who had acquired it while working as a military supply chain officer in Italy in 1943–44. His heirs ultimately decided to return it to the Italian state. In the absence of knowledge on the mosaic's provenance, the Ministry of Culture opted to allocate it to the Pompeii Archaeological Park, citing the fact that mosaics of similar technique and style are known from the Vesuvian area. An in-depth research launched by the Park yielded an unexpected result: the mosaic is unrelated to Pompeii.
