First: help children understand when they are truly hungry without using food as a reward or punishment. Second: "Clean your plate" should no longer be used because it can result in food refusal. Third: start the day with a healthy breakfast. These are some of the suggestions for educating children toward healthy eating from UNICEF Italy. Worldwide, 188 million school-age children and adolescents—one in ten—are obese. In Italy, the proportion of children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 living with obesity fell from 32% in 2000 to 27% in 2022. However, this percentage remains high. A program to prevent obesity has so been initiated. Children should exercise for at least 60 minutes each day, and parents should avoid using food as a reward or punishment. Removing some items (such as sugar) from your diet may cause your youngster to crave them even more. Rather than saying no to unhealthy foods and drinks, limit portion sizes and establish clear rules for how frequently they can be consumed: not every day, for example.
