A new law has been established to penalize fraudulent online reviews. Digital platforms (including e-commerce sites, booking portals, and social media) will no longer be permitted to publish evaluations unless the user shows proof of purchase, such as a receipt, invoice, or bill. Reviews must be submitted within 90 days of making the purchase or using the service. Site owners must reject or remove comments that do not fulfill the authenticity and timeliness standards. To boost transparency and verify user identity, authorities and platforms are encouraged to implement voluntary codes of behavior. Writing a fake or reputation-damaging review is a criminal violation punishable by up to €1,000 in fines or, in severe situations, imprisonment. If the fake review was created by a competitor, the competitor could be sued for damages in civil court.
