Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto acknowledged in parliament that the recent attack in the Middle East fell outside the framework of international law, responding to criticism from opposition lawmakers. Speaking at the Italian Chamber of Deputies during a debate on the crisis in Iran, Crosetto addressed accusations that Israel and the United States had acted in violation of international legal norms. “Of course it was outside the rules of international law,” the minister said in his reply to the chamber. Crosetto added that the Israeli attack began once the position of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, became known, describing the conflict as one that erupted suddenly and without the broader international community being aware of it in advance. “This is a war that started without the world knowing, and one that we now have to manage,” he said. According to Crosetto, Italy’s main priority is to deal with the consequences of a crisis that rapidly escalated. “Our task now is to manage the consequences of a crisis that has erupted and that we did not want,” he concluded.
